This November, we are welcoming local artist Sherry LaFayette to the OMG Art Hub. Being new to North Vancouver, Sherry draws inspiration from her surrounding, painting sea, mountain and coastal landscapes of the Pacific West Coast. Drop by our showroom and see her painting up close and personal during the months of November and December. Sherry will be exhibiting alongside woodworker Coldwell Creations and her wooden vases.
A CONVERSATION WITH SHERRY
OMG: What is the inspiration behind the pieces in your exhibit?
Sherry: The inspiration for my paintings comes from emotions and thoughts provoked by visual experiences and memories of past, present and imagined natural surroundings.
Being new to beautiful North Vancouver, BC (our family moved here a couple of years ago), and new to painting, there is a lot to tap into creatively.
I have mostly been painting sea, mountain and coastal landscapes of the Pacific West Coast, but have recently found myself intrigued by some ‘forest finds’ in particular the old growth trees stumps I’ve come across on hikes and forest walks on the North Shore. They have so much character, almost human-like with details of their past life and how they nurture new life around and within. Time spent in the woods definitely inspired these pieces.
OMG: Can you describe your creative process or technique and how you approached making theses pieces?
Sherry: I am an emerging, abstract expressive landscape artist working mainly in acrylics on canvas.
My collectors frequently comment on the movement and energy in my pieces, I think that comes from my love of experimenting with bold brush strokes, texture and colour.
Usually my paintings start from small, quick sketches I’ve drawn to get ideas down on paper or from photos I’ve taken while out in nature. These start a bit of a creative flow as I decide on canvas sizing and colour palette.
OMG: What are you plans for future artistic projects or exhibitions?
Shery: So far, in November 2024, I will have couple of my paintings in the ‘Square Treats Art Show’ in Downtown Oakville, Ontario.
I’m participating in North Van Arts Fundraiser, the Anonymous Art Show at CityScape Community Art Space in Lonsdale, North Vancouver. I will be donating 2 paintings for sale to help support their community arts initiative. Sale starts November 28th – December 15th 2024.
I have a few commission requests and I am also hoping to host a private show with a couple of local artists in the new year.
OMG: Where else can we find your artwork?
Sherry: You can find my artwork on my website or Instagram.
In person pop by Buzz Coffee Bar in Deep Cove, North Vancouver to see a couple of my paintings and printed art note cards and postcards.
