Katie has been experimenting with acrylics for several years, independently as well as in workshops in BC and Ontario. Painting became a priority in Montreal, where she joined The Longhaul studio artists collective.
The paintings suggest atmosphere and emotions associated with specific locales, both in traditional landscape and abstract style. Recent works developed during the pandemic explore the constant renewal of life emerging on the old growth stumps of North Vancouver. The Regeneration series of paintings attempts to convey the combination of energy and calm found in the forests as well as the lush layers of vegetation surrounding the strong sculptural stumps.
Katie is an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a member of North Van Arts and the West Vancouver Community Arts Council. She has volunteered at the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre, Kamloops Art Gallery and the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington and is currently acting as Treasurer for North Van Arts. Katie lives in North Vancouver, BC.

A Conversation with Katie Rodgers

OMG: What was your inspiration behind the pieces in this exhibit?

Katie: My paintings are inspired by my surroundings, trying to recreate the atmosphere and emotions associated with certain places, both in traditional landscape and abstract style. Lately in the studio, I’ve been trying to amplify certain elements of my beloved landscapes. The idea was to create a new feeling or energy from the original components of the environment that first inspired me. This is a collection of coastal inspired landscapes and deconstructed abstract paintings.

OMG: Can you describe your creative process or technique and how you approached making these pieces?

Katie: These paintings are all acrylic on canvas or wood panel. I use a variety of tools and textures and vigorous application of paint to create a combination of energy and calm in the work.

OMG What are your plans for future artistic projects or exhibitions?

Katie: I will be a part of a group exhibition at the Ferry Building in July and will continue to exhibit my work online in the Artwrk Artist Stable at Artwrk.ca. Recently I have exhibited at the West Vancouver Arts Council Silk Purse Gallery, Federation Gallery on Granville Island, and the North Van Arts District Foyer Gallery.

OMG: Where else can we find your artwork?

Katie: Locally my work can be found in the North Van Arts Art Rental Program, at the Artisan Collective in North Vancouver and Madeleine Design Studio in Surrey. I offer original artwork, commissions and Limited Edition Reproductions through www.katierodgers.ca. You can also find me on Instagram @katierodgersart
